Yuvraj Singh is one of the handful of cricketers in IPL, who was part of several franchises during his stint. But due to a vast amount of underperformance, he could never stay with a specific team for an extended period. In an interview with Times Now, the left-handed batsman expressed his disappointment at not being able to do so unlike his peers.
The southpaw attracted two highest bids in 2014 and 2015, when Royal Challengers Bangalore and Delhi Daredevils secured his services. The two teams grabbed him for record-breaking prices of INR 14 crores and 16 crores respectively. The 16 crores-deal is by far the highest amount dished out on a player by a franchise in any auction.
The 38-year old rued the lack of chance of playing for one team for a long period of time unlike MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, and Rohit Sharma. Yuvraj acknowledged that he received the base or foundation; however, never been able to solidify it and get a permanent spot. Virat Kohli has stayed with Bangalore since 2008 while MS Dhoni has played for Chennai since 2008, excluding 2016 and 2017, in which he was part of Pune. As far as Rohit Sharma’s case goes, he joined Mumbai Indians in 2011 and lead them to four IPL titles as the captain.
“I never got a chance to play for 3-4 years for one franchise team. Virat (Kohli), (MS) Dhoni, Rohit (Sharma) have played for the same franchise team for many years. You get a base but I have never been able to get a permanent place.” Yuvraj said as quoted by Times Now.
Through the years, the World Cup-winning star kept moving from one team to another. Apart from Kings XI Punjab, the all-rounder played for Pune Warriors India in 2011 and 2013. He went on to play for Bangalore in 2014, Delhi in 2015, Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2016 and 2017, and finally for Mumbai Indians in 2019.
Yuvraj Singh Communicates his unhappiness while leading Punjab:
Furthermore, Yuvraj Singh was unhappy when serving as the captain of the Punjab franchise. He reckoned that he didn’t seem to have the control a leader should have and representing the team didn’t make him satisfied enough.
“There was a place from where I wanted to run away, it was Kings XI Punjab. Whenever I asked for a player, they did not give it to me. It is also amazing that when I left, they bought all those players. I was just the captain on the team for the sake of it. I loved playing for Punjab but I wanted to run away from that franchise.” he concluded.
