New Zealand pair Joe Carter and Brett Hampton shattered the records by smashing a mind-boggling 43 runs in an over.

There is little denying that the modern-day game is all about power-hitting. Bigger bats, fielding restrictions, smaller grounds and several other factors have tilted the game slightly in the batsmen’s favour. But all these factors doesn’t undermine with Northern District pair Joe Carter and Brett Hampton achieved on Wednesday. The duo took 43 off an over bowled by Central District’s Willem Ludick in a Ford Trophy fixture. This is the most number of runs conceded in an over in a List A game.

The previous record was held by Bangladesh’s Alauddin Babu. The Bangladesh cricketer had conceded 39 runs in a Dhaka Premier League match in 2013. In that game, former Zimbabwe captain Elton Chigumbura had smashed four sixes and three fours in a seven-ball over which included a no ball.

Coming to the 43-run over, Brett Hampton began the proceedings with a four. He then hit two sixes off two waist-high no-balls. The following delivery was a legitimate one but ended up outside the rope. Brett Hampton then took took a single to give Joe Carter the strike. Carter, playing in only his fifth List A matches, smashed the last three balls for six to shatter the records.

The over read: 4,6nb,6nb,6,1,6,6,6. Ludick’s bowling figures nosedived from 9-0-42-1 to 10-0-85-1.

Here is a clip of that over:

Hampton and Carter also rescued Northern District from a precarious position. They joined hands in the middle when their side was reeling at 95 for 5 The duo went on to add 178 runs for the sixth wicket.  The 178-run stand was a Northern Districts record for the sixth wicket, surpassing the 150 set by BJ Watling and Peter McGlashan. Brett Hampton missed his maiden List A century by just five runs, while Joe Carter went on to complete his ton.
