Former Australia keeper-batsman Adam Gilchrist has reminded the pressure persisting on their batsmen after their batting line-up’s mediocre show in the ongoing Test in Melbourne against India. Adam Gilchrist mainly aimed at opening batsman Joe Burns, who he feels has done just enough to reach the side. The Australians got bundled out for 195 in the first innings of the second Test after choosing to bat.

Joe Burns, who crafted a match-winning half-century in Adelaide, could not build upon it and fell for ten-ball duck. The Queensland batsman received the nod for the first two Tests, mainly due to David Warner’s injury while the hosts had to insert a makeshift opener in Matthew Wade. After managing 191 in the first innings in Adelaide, they went on to score only four runs more than the same.

Adam Gilchrist pointed out that the pressure would be on all of them and that Joe Burns was the focus amongst all as he has hardly managed to reach double figures on a very few occasions. The 96-Test veteran opined that it would weigh heavily against the right-handed batsman and despite the fifty in Adelaide, it will be challenging.

“The heat is going to be on. The heat is going to be on all of them… the focus was clearly on Burns before the first Test, he just did enough to get here. It’s just the first innings scores, since 97, 98 in the first Test last year he barely got to double figures of a Test match. That’s going to weigh heavily against him. We saw in the second innings in Adelaide he did enough, but it’s definitely going to be tough,” Gilchrist told Foxsports.com.au.

Adam Gilchrist further said that if David Warner becomes fit for the third Test, he should replace Joe Burns and would not matter if two left-handers open the innings. The 49-year old commented that it is all about getting the right batters at the correct position.

“You get your best batters in position; however, it falls in terms of left hand, right hand it doesn’t matter, you just get your best combo,” he added.
