The fans were once again left disappointed by Rishabh Pant. The highly-rated wicketkeeper has been tipped by many to replace the legendary MS Dhoni in the future. However, his performance in international cricket so far has not been promising.

Pant had first grabbed the headlines with his performance in the 2016 Under-19 World Cup. In the same year, he had taken domestic cricket by storm last year. Pant grabbed the headlines after slamming 308 off just 326 balls against Maharashtra in Ranji Trophy before following it up with a 48-ball hundred against Jharkhand which is one of the fastest first-class centuries by an Indian.

He had gone on to finish the season with  972 runs in only eight outings including four centuries, a couple of the fifties and an amazing strike-rate of over 107. A maiden call-up from the senior Indian team soon followed as he was included in the team for the T20I series against England. A good performance in the Indian Premier League saw him make it to the standby list for the Champions Trophy before he was recalled for the series against West Indies.

However, he failed to deliver on the expected lines. Well, his latest outing came against Sri Lanka in the first game of the Nidahas Trophy on Tuesday. The young left-hander came out to bat when India needed some quick run.  However, he failed to bat according to the situation and scored a run-a-ball 23.

Meanwhile, the fans were quick to react to the youngster’s failure. In fact, Pant was targetted to such an extent that former cricketer Aakash Chopra had to come up with a comment which read:

India start campaign with defeat:

Meanwhile, coming to the match, Sri Lanka thrashed India by 5 wickets to start their campaign on a bright note. Sent in to bat first, India posted 174 for 5 with Shikhar Dhawan top-scoring for them with a 90-run knock. In reply, Sri Lanka chased down the total with 9 balls remaining.
