Putting a string of losses behind them, Australia put on a show of sheer dominance against Pakistan at the Harare Sports Club on Monday. Entering the tri-series, after being crushed by England on their recent tour of UK recently, Australia needed to be at their ruthless best, to keep the demons away.
That is precisely what Aaron Finch’s unit did, as the Kangaroos decimated the number one T20I team by nine wickets.
Stanlake the man to watch out for
Lanky pacer Billy Stanlake, termed as one of the finds of IPL 2018, dished out some sweet chin music to the Pakistan top order. Striking within his first over, the pacer ravaged Pakistan, as he sent back the experienced Mohammad Hafeez for a three-ball duck.
Stanlake followed it up with three more top-order wickets, ending with figures of 4-8 in his quota of four overs.
The Pakistani lower-middle-order resisted a bit and put on a show, as Shadab Khan, and Faheem Ashraf ensured the side got to a respectable total, a possibility which seemed too far away, early on in the innings.
Finch’s boys did the job
The chase turned out to be a mere formality, as Aaron Finch came out all guns blazing, as his 33-ball knock of 68 ensured an early finish to the game. Post the victory, skipper Aaron Finch was all smiles, as he lauded his unit for a display of sheer strength.
“We played really well, the tone that our bowlers set after winning the toss was fantastic,” said Finch. “We have come here to win; we have been training well. Nice to have a polished performance to start here.”
Praising Billy Stanlake for his mind-boggling pace bowling display, the skipper admitted,
“Stanlake did an outstanding job. Jhye, who didn’t play much in the UK bounced back today. The quicks bowled really aggressive, I hung onto a couple, and it was nice. At times, we are chasing a reasonable small total, one or two overs can break the game. When you are chasing at 4 or 5 runs an over, it becomes easy.”
