A shoulder injury to pacer Mohammad Abbas is likely to open doors for Shaheen Afridi. Meanwhile, the youngster is expected to make his Test debut in the third and final match against New Zealand. The decider starts on Monday and both the sides will look to clinch the series.

Along with Saad Ali, Shaheen found his name on the 15-man Test squad and is now very close to living his dream.

“If I get a chance I will do my best,” Shaheen told AFP. “I always had belief in my ability and in my hard work although I didn’t expect my chance will come in Tests so early.”

The 18-year-old said he received support from the management and support staff. He mentioned the role played by coach Mickey Arthur and bowling coach Azhar Mahmood, as it has helped him immensely. However, the pacer was also seen bowling the death overs, earning his team vital wins.

Early breakthrough for Shaheen Afridi

The lanky pacer broke into the scene after producing the best bowling figures by a debutant in Pakistan domestic circuit. In September last year, he bagged figures of 8/39 while playing for Khan Research Laboratory in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy. The quick-bowler was consistent in U19 tournaments and PSL.

Clinical against the Kiwis

Meanwhile, Shaheen Afridi was adjudged man of the series in this year’s ODI series against New Zealand. Shaheen scalped back to back four-wicket hauls. Also, he won’t be the first from his family to represent Pakistan in whites. Shaheen’s brother Riaz Afridi played a Test match for Pakistan. The cricketer said it was his brother who inspired him to take up cricket. And hence, he owes his success to him.

“My brother was my role model who taught me how to bowl and how to approach cricket with a positive frame of mind,” he said. “I owe my success to him.”
