Australia fast-bowler Peter Siddle, on Sunday, announced his retirement from international cricket, thus bringing down curtains on his 67-Test career. He was recently called up by Australia for the ongoing Boxing day Test against New Zealand but was not selected in the side in to play in Melbourne and was soon released.

Peter Siddle last played for Australia in this year’s Ashes and helped his side draw the series 2-2 in England. It was the first time since 2001 that Australia returned from England with the urn. The veteran pacer went to Australia’s dressing room to convey his decision to his teammates personally.

He  exchanged hugs with players and support staff before play on the morning of ongoing day four. Peter Siddle had told coach Justin Langer of his decision a day before his match-winning final over for the Adelaide Strikers in the Big Bash League.

“Just being able to play, to walk out, wear the baggy green -– I’d watched guys like Punter (Ricky Ponting), Steve Waugh, guys like that wear it, represent Australia,” he said.

“Every time I stepped out was amazing, I don’t think I could pick one special one. At the end of the day, to play one is amazing, to end up playing what I did is truly special,” he added.

A look on Peter Siddle’s Test career:

In a career that spanned over a decade, Peter Siddle played 67 Tests and picked up an impressive 221 wickets with the help of eight five-wicket hauls. Siddle made his Test debut in Mohali in 2008 against a star-studded India side and dismissed the legendary Sachin Tendulkar to pick his maiden wicket in Tests.

He is the 13th highest Test wicket-taker among Australian bowlers and is best remembered for the hat-trick he claimed on his 26th birthday against England in Brisbane in 2010 Ashes. Peter Siddle also played 20 one-day internationals and two T20Is. The right-arm fast-bowler will continue to ply his trade in domestic cricket, including for the Adelaide Strikers in the Big Bash League and Victoria in the Sheffield Shield. He will also play for English county side Essex.
