It has been an interesting last few months for Ramesh Powar. Initially, he was appointed as the head coach of the Indian Women Team and later, was removed following the rifts between him and the ODI skipper Mithali Raj. Now, he once again gets the nod from the board to be the bowling coach of the India-A team for the upcoming series against South Africa-A.

Powar was then appointed as Arothe’s successor on 14 August, ahead of the likes of Sunil Joshi and Ajay Ratra, although he was a temporary contract that lasted only till the end of the World T20. Powar’s regime saw the Indian side become more attacking in approach.

His tenure coincided with the rise of Mumbai prodigy Jemimah Rodrigues, who got a longer rope during this period and managed to seal the No 3 spot in the T20I side. India won the three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka (part of the ICC Women’s Championship) 2-1, before romping to a 4-0 series victory in the T20Is in September.

The BCCI later invited applications for the head coach post. Powar was one of the candidates in the fray. WV Raman, who was the second preference on the list of CAC, was given the charge. The first preference Gary Kirsten was found conflicted due to his involvement with IPL franchise Royal Challengers Bangalore.

Powar, 41, played two Test matches and 31 ODIs during a career that spanned a decade and a half. He was then turned to coach. So far, it has been brilliant for Ramesh Powar. He got decent series victories under his belt in whatever stints he was part of.

The five one-dayers between India A and South Africa A will be played on August 29, 31, September 2, 4 and 6. All the matches will be played at Greenfield International Stadium, Thiruvanthapuram.
