The fans must have been surprised to see the social media profiles of Indian Premier League (IPL) outfit Royal Challengers Bangalore. In a surprising move, the franchise dropped Bangalore from its name as well as removed the team logo from the social media handles on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

The reason behind it is that Royal Challengers Bangalore are reportedly set to enter this year’s IPL with a new name. The three-time finalists are set for a possible name change ahead of the upcoming season.According to media reports, a few sections of fans are not happy with the franchise for calling the side as Bangalore – which is now the old name of the Garden City.

The franchise has now paid heed to it and has hinted towards the same after removing the word Bangalore from its Twitter and Instagram handle. The franchise’s name on social media is now just Royal Challengers instead of Royal Challengers Bangalore.

As per reports doing the rounds on the internet, the official announcement about the same is going to be made on February 16 and the term Bengaluru will be added to the name.

“Due to the agitation from local fans, RCB officials have decided to rename home team name from Bangalore to Bengaluru. Change of logo also expected. Its all happening on February 16, claim reports according to myKhel.

The city was originally called Bengaluru till the third Anglo Mysore war of 1792. However, the name was changed to Bangalore once the British took over the reins of the city after winning the war. But in 2014, the Government of India decided to rename the city back to its old name of Bengaluru.

Royal Challengers Bangalore also have a new-look side and a new backroom staff for the upcoming season. The Bengaluru-based franchise will be hoping that the new-look side, new backroom staff and the potential new name change their fortunes as they will be aiming for their first-ever IPL title in the upcoming season.
