India’s opening batsman Rohit Sharma will appear for the mandatory Yo-Yo test at the National Cricket Academy on Sunday (June 15). He was initially scheduled to appear for the test on Friday. However, he skipped the test due to personal engagements.

Rohit was recently in Russia and as a result had to miss the first date. He had taken the permission from the BCCI for visiting Russia.

“Rohit had taken permission from the BCCI for his personal engagements (he is in Russia as a brand ambassador of a watch company). There’s no rule that all tests have to be conducted on the same day. He will be appearing for the YoYo Test tomorrow,” GM (cricket Operations) Saba Karim confirmed.

The Yo-Yo test is all over the news for quite some time now after Mohammed Shami, Sanju Samson and Ambati Rayudu failed to clear it. And as a result both the players lost their spots from the respective teams. Samson was a part of India A squad for the tour of England. However, Ishan Kishan replaced him after he failed the test. Shami also lost his place in the Test team for the Afghanistan game.

On the other hand, Rayudu lost his place from the ODI team for the England tour after failing to clear the test. Rayudu earned the call from the national selectors after his dazzling displays in the just-concluded Indian Premier League. He played an integral role in Chennai Super Kings’ title-winning run in the IPL this year.  Among the top-five run-scorers, this season was the best IPL Rayudu had, scoring 602 runs at a strike rate of 149.75 including one century.

Suresh Raina has replaced Rayudu in the team.

With clearing the test now mandatory, Rohit will be desperate for the same. The opening batsman is more than likely to pass the test with flying colours.

Rohit was last seen in action during the IPL. He was not a part of the squad for the Afghanistan Test. If he clear the test, he will get back to action when India tours Ireland and England later in June. The Men in Blue will take on Ireland in two T20Is. After that, they will depart for England for three T20Is and as many ODIs which will be followed by a five-match Test series.

Meanwhile, in case Rohit fails to clear the test, the board will have no other option than to look out for replacements.

One such player can be Rishabh Pant. He had a sensational IPL season for the Delhi Daredevils this year. While his team finished at the bottom of the points table, the young wicketkeeper-batsman looked in red-hot form throughout the season.

Pant ended as the second highest run-getter in the tournament with 684 runs from 14 games. It included five fifties and one century.

Another player can be Krunal Pandya. While he is not a like for like replacement for Rohit, the team management can try out the highly-rated all-rounder. He has been impressing in the IPL for quite some time now.
