MS Dhoni, former Indian captain, has not played a competitive game for exactly a year now. The former World Cup-winning skipper last turned out for the national side during the heartbreaking 2019 World Cup semi-final against New Zealand.
Since then, Dhoni has been on an extended sabbatical. Every time an Indian squad for a series was announced, speculations galore by fans, media and pundits regarding the enigmatic former wicketkeeper-batsman’s future as he continued to remain out of the set-up.
Dhoni would have made his return to competitive cricket with the 13th edition of the Indian Premier League, which was originally scheduled to take place between March 29-May 24 but was eventually cancelled due to the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic.
“He’s probably taking stock of how much he’s left in him”- S Badrinath on MS Dhoni
Subramaniam Badrinath, former Indian batsman, and someone who played under the leadership of MS Dhoni for both the national team as well as for Chennai Super Kings [CSK] has reckoned that the champion Indian cricketer must take a call on his international career.
Badrinath, however, added, that the decision must be left to the former captain.
Badrinath reckoned that Dhoni is taking stock of his career after having been played at the top level for 15 years.
“It’s important he chooses. His body is also something that has gone through quite a bit. There’s a reason why he doesn’t play First-Class cricket or Test cricket because his back has also troubled him. It happens with any keeper, once you’ve played so much cricket under so much stress,” S Badrinath told Hindustan Times.
“He’s probably taking stock of how much he’s left in him. A player of his calibre, nobody should decide whether he should play the T20 World Cup, he should play IPL. It’s upto MS to decide what he wants to decide. Right now, there is too much speculation going around as well, most of it is not true.” he said.
