South Africa finally managed to beat India in the ongoing One-Day International series. After three consecutive defeats, the Proteas beat the visitors by five wickets (DLS method) in a rain-curtailed fourth ODI to keep the series alive.

Given a revised total of 202 in 28 overs, the hosts reached the target with 15 balls remaining. The game was in India’s clutches when Hardik Pandya dismissed AB de Villiers. At that stage, South Africa still needed 100 off 67 balls. With the big names already back in the hut, the game slightly tilted in India’s favour.

However, David Miller (39 off 28), Heinrich Klaasen (43* off 27 ) and Andile Phehlukwayo (23* off five) played whirlwind knocks to take their team home.

Earlier, another middle-order failure prevented India from capitalising on the good start. Shikhar Dhawan and Virat Kohli had done their part by sharing 158 runs for the second wicket.

Chris Morris ended the stand by dismissing Kohli for 75. Dhawan, on the other hand, went on to score a fine century.  India kept losing wickets at regular intervals and struggled for momentum towards the end, but MS Dhoni remained till the end, scoring 42 to help India post 289.

The thrilling game also witnessed a plethora of records being made. So here is a look at them:

1. Shikhar Dhawan became the first Indian player to score a century in his 100th ODI. Playing his 100th game, the left-handed batsman scored 109. Overall he became the ninth player to score a ton in the 100th ODI.

2. Shikhar Dhawan’s hundred was the third by an Indian in Johannesburg. Sourav Ganguly (127) and Sachin Tendulkar (101) scored tons in the 2001 ODI against the home team. Unfortunately, all the centuries came in losing cause.

3. Dhawan also became the 34th Indian and 246th overall to play 100 ODIs.

4. Dhawan’s century was the first in 27 ODIs for India in South Africa where their opener scored a century. Sachin Tendulkar’s 152 against Namibia in the 2003 World Cup was the previous ODI ton by an Indian opener in SA.

5. Dhawan became the first player to score a duck in his maiden ODI and a century in his 100th ODI. The century was also his first on the South African soil.

6. Virat Kohli’s 393 runs in this ODI series so far are the most by a player in an India-South Africa bilateral ODI series. He surpassed AB de Villiers’ tally of 358 runs in the 2015 series in India.

7. Kohli surpassed former skipper Mohammad Azharuddin (9378) to become India’s fifth-leading run-scorer in ODIs. Sachin Tendulkar leads the list.

8. Kohli’s 393 runs are the most by an Indian captain in a bilateral ODI series surpassing his tally of 330 runs against Sri Lanka last year.

9. The India skipper’s tally of 679 runs on this tour so far is the most by an Indian captain on a single tour. Rahul Dravid aggregated 645 runs in the all formats during the 2006 Windies tour.

10. Kohli’s 679 runs are the most for a visiting captain on a South African tour. He surpassed Brian Lara’s 627 runs that came in the 2003/04 tour.

11. The match witnessed the eight instance of a century-plus stand between Kohli and Dhawan for the second wicket. The two added 158 runs to go level with Sourav Ganguly, and Rahul Dravid for the maximum 100-run stands for the second wicket.

12. Dhawan’s 4309 runs are the second most for any player at the end of 100th ODI game. Only Hashim Amla (4804) scored more than Dhawan after 100 ODIs.

13. Andile Phehlukwayo’s batting strike-rate of 460 during his 23* off five balls is the highest for any player in International innings (min: 5 balls faced). Dwayne Smith scored seven-ball 29 at a strike-rate of 414.28 in a T20I against Bangladesh in 2007 also in Johannesburg. Sunil Narine scored a six-ball 28 at a strike-rate of 400 against Australia in 2012 which is the only other ODI innings with 400+ strike-rate.
