Irrespective of the side you support, you have to admit from the bottom of your heart, that watching a champion like Dale Steyn struggle with injuries in the evening of his career is a disheartening sight. For the fifth time in his previous six Tests, has Steyn walked off the field due to severe injury issues, only to stay out of action for an extended while.
On the second afternoon against India, when Steyn felt a niggle or two in his heel, the pace legend was seen limping out of the arena. Later, it was confirmed that Steyn had a muscle tear in the region and was set to miss the remainder of the series.
Even though South Africa can boast of some exceptional inventory in their pace bowling department, there is no substitute for Dale Steyn. The champion pacer has been in a league of his own, and none of his contemporaries can even be equated near him.
The sheer energy which he infuses within the Proteas setup is exemplary of why even today, are fast bowlers regarded such an integral part of the game.
Against India in particular, Steyn enjoys a terrific record, averaging in the low 20’s with the ball. During India’s 2010/11 tour of South Africa, Steyn was on fire throughout as he picked up 21 wickets with the ball in the three-match series.
The menacing pacer bowled some absolute jaffas which truly tested the Indian batsmen comprising of the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, and VVS Laxman. In the video below, is a compilation of all his wickets from that three-match series against India.
Probably, performances like these, which kept South Africa in the hunt throughout are what which define Dale Steyn as a cricketer.
