Rohit Sharma marked his foray into Test match opening with his fourth career century against South Africa in the first Test in Visakhapatnam. On a day when Rohit showed signs of settling the debates, legendary batsman Sachin Tendulkar has revealed the factors to be a successful opener.
The Mumbai batsman, who came to this Test on the back of a duck, took on the Proteas bowlers to the cleaners. By stumps, India had marched on to 202/0, with Rohit unshaken at 115* and Mayank Agarwal having moved towards a maiden Test century of his own, batting on 84.

On the same day when Rohit Sharma showed signs to settle India’s opening problems, Sachin Tendulkar has delivered on the basics to be a successful opener. Tendulkar said that everything depends on the mindset.
“It’s all about the mindset. If somebody wants to open the innings, then he needs to have a different kind of mindset,” Tendulkar told PTI in an exclusive interview.
The legendary batsman also drew references of his teammate Virender Sehwag, who played his natural game across the formats. Sachin Tendulkar reminded that along with the mindset, it is also about ability, which Sehwag had in abundance.

“Sehwag had that different mindset. Be it a ODI or Test, he would more or less play in the same manner. That aggressive nature was always there. Again, it boils down to the capability and the potential of that particular player,” said Tendulkar.

In conclusion, Sachin Tendulkar remarked that it is always not the numbers that matter. However, the most important thing which makes the difference is what the player brings to the team in his capacity and how is helping the side grow.
“Like for Sehwag, he opened for the first time in England and got a hundred. It brought him success but there were occasions, when he also had his share of rough patches. So it’s not the numbers that always really matter but what you bring to the table does,” he signed off.
