The Selection Committee for sports awards 2019 on Saturday recommended the name of Sanjay Bhardwaj for the Dronacharya Award. Bhardwaj has coached India stars like Gautam Gambhir and Amit Mishra. The young and talented batsman from Delhi, Nitish Rana has also developed his skills under watchful eyes of Bhardwaj.

The Dronacharya Award, officially known as Dronacharya Award for Outstanding Coaches in Sports and Games, is sports coaching honour of the Republic of India. The award, named after Drona, often referred as Dronacharya or Guru Drona, a character named from the Sanskrit epic Mahabharata of ancient India. Awarded by the Ministry of Youths and Sports Ministry, this is the highest recipient for a coach for their contribution to the game.

Sanjay Bhardwaj, who was an elected executive member of the Delhi and District Cricket Association, has had a significant contribution to the states’ Ranji team and the country. His most successful students were Gautam Gambhir, Amit Mishra, and Nitish Rana. The former India cricket Gambhir has been vocal about his childhood coach’s role in shaping his career. The southpaw played two crucial knocks in the 2007 and 2011 World Cup-winning campaign. On the other hand, Nitish Rana is one of the most talented cricketers in the country. He has left a significant mark in the IPL and has already represented India A.

Along with Sanjay Bhardwaj for cricket, Merzban Patel (Hockey), Rambir Singh Khokhar (kabaddi) have been recommended for the life-time category. The selection committee has recommended Vimal Kumar (badminton), Sandeep Gupta (table tennis), and Mohinder Singh Dhillon (athletics) for the regular category.
