Former India batsman Sanjay Manjrekar would have definitely loved his birthday not to come anytime soon. The ex-cricketer-turned-commentator turned 54 on Friday. Known for making bold and controversial statements, Sanjay Manjrekar represented in 37 Tests and 74 One-Day Internationals. In Tests, he scored 2,043 runs with the help of 4 tons while in the 50-over format, he managed 1,994 runs including one ton.

But more than his accomplishment on the cricket field, Sanjay Manjrekar was facing the heat from the fans when they came to know about his birthday. Sanjay Manjrekar did not make too many fans with his recent comments regarding India allrounder Ravindra Jadeja. Manjrekar had caused a stir by saying that he does not like ‘bit and pieces’ cricketer Jadeja.

Later, Jadeja had slammed Manjrekar on Twitter. But that was not the end. After Jadeja’s fine outing against Sri Lanka, Manjrekar included him in his predicted playing XI for India’s semifinal against New Zealand. But hours before the game, he said that India should not play Jadeja. India, however, included Jadeja in their playing eleven and he turned out to their best performer.

Jadeja picked up a brilliant wicket while conceding just 34 runs in ten overs. He was equally superb in the field where he pulled off a great run out and a catch. But it was his effort with the bat that has made him the man of the moment now.

He joined MS Dhoni in the middle when India were reeling at 92 for 6 while chasing 240. While Dhoni played the second fiddle as usual, Ravindra Jadeja kept hitting the big shots. He scored his fifty off just 39 balls. The southpaw eventually scored 77 in 59 balls studded with 4 fours and as many sixes. But his effort was just not enough as India lost the game by 18 runs.

And thus when the fans came to know that Sanjay Manjrekar is celebrating his 54th birthday today, they did not leave kind wishes for him. Most of the fans not only criticised him but also asked him to give up on commentary.
