Playing under the captaincy of MS Dhoni continues to remain one of the dreams for all the young cricketers in the country and Sanju Samson is not an exception either. The former India skipper has been one of the most inspirational cricketers in the country in the last decade or so and unsurprisingly, every youngster wants to share the dressing room with the great man.
Well, Sanju Samson has been lucky enough to share the dressing room as well the field with the World Cup-winning captain. The Kerala star was just 19 when he was added to India squad for the tour of England in 2014. Unfortunately, he did not make his debut on the tour.
He made his debut on the Zimbabwe tour in 2015 but MS Dhoni was rested for that series. The right-handed batsman then had to wait for four long years to earn a recall and by the time, he returned to the Indian team, MS Dhoni was neither the captain nor a part of the team.
Sanju Samson was recalled by India for the T20I series against Bangladesh last year and he has been with the T20I team since then. But while he has not played under Dhoni in international cricket, he did get the experience of playing under the legendary captain in 2017 when Dhoni led India A against England in a warm-up game.
Sanju Samson recently opened up on that experience and revealed it was always his dream to play under Dhoni’s captaincy.
“I first shared the dressing room with him [MS Dhoni] when we went to England,” Samson said during a chat with Chennai Super Kings (CSK) social media presenter Rupha Ramani.
“I had a dream that Mahi bhai is the captain of the team. He is changing fields. I was standing in slips or something and he said, ‘Sanju waha ja’,” he recalled.
The young cricketer further said that he finally lived his dream when he played for India A in that match, saying: “I was in the slips when he said, ‘Sanju udhar jaa’.”
