The 3rd edition of the Pakistan Super League is nearing the business end of the tournament. The Quetta Gladiators have looked the most organised team in the tournament and look well set to enter the playoffs yet one more time. Skipper Sarfaraz Ahmed has expressed his eagerness on winning the championship this time around. Quetta faltered in the final hurdle last year losing to Peshawar Zalmi at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore.
As per reports in the Khaleej Times, Sarfaraz stated that the franchise is keen to win the tournament for the people of Balochistan. The province has been terrorised I the recent past. So he appropriately pointed out that the franchise is looking to enter the playoffs and once they do that they will think about the final. He aims at bringing some to joy to the terror affected province.
“Quetta reached the final in previous two editions of the PSL but failed to cross the final hurdle. First, we will try to qualify for the playoffs and then think of reaching the final. The team is confident of winning the title this time for the people of Balochistan,” Sarfraz Ahmed was quoted by the Khaleej Times.
“The security situation has improved tremendously in Balochistan and Sadiq Sanjrani was elected Chairman of Senate (upper house) on Monday. We want to give another good news to people of the region by winning the title on March 25. If we win, it will be a great news for the less developed area of Pakistan and the owners of Quetta Gladiators have left no stone unturned to make it happen,” he added.
When asked what feeling he will have to play the final in his hometown Karachi but for the opposition team. Captain Sarfaraz Ahmed, however, said that the professionalism does not allow loyalties to be divided.
“I am from Karachi and I have played all my cricket in the city. Since I am representing Quetta, there is no question of divided loyalties. My priority will be to win for Quetta and I hope God will help us this time,” he noted.
The Gladiators were the favourites to win the title last year. However many of the overseas players refused to tour Pakistan for the final which affected their team combination in the all-important clash. He admitted that this sort of things does affect the preparations of the side, but there is very little a player can do about it.
“Unavailability of our top players in the last year final proved a big hurdle for the team. It was players’ decision and the management was helpless. The same could happen this year as well. I have no idea how the team officials could convince players to go to Pakistan. We can face the similar situation if we reach the knock-out stage of the tournament,” remarked the Pakistani skipper.
