One of the greatest all-rounders to grace the game, Shane Watson named Ricky Ponting and Shane Warne as the two greatest captains he has played under during his stint as an international cricketer. Watson has had a legendary career for Australia, especially in the limited-overs format. In a career span that lasted for almost two decades, Watson emerged as one of the greats of the game.
He made his debut for Australia in 2002 when the Ricky Ponting-led Australia were one of the strongest ever squads to combat on the international stage as a unit. Watson has claimed a plethora of ICC trophies during his stint at the crease and he himself had the opportunity of leading the Kangaroos on multiple occasions.
Having hung his boots in the international spectrum, Shane Watson has reflected back on his career naming the two best captains he has had the opportunity of playing under.
Shane Watson Names Ricky Ponting and Shane Warne As His Best Captains
“Ricky Ponting knew how to get the best out of me for sure. He was phenomenal. I think I was very fortunate to play under some very good captains. Shane Warne, I played under him at Rajasthan Royals for four years, he was a phenomenal captain. Tactically on and off the field. On the field from a man management point of view he was excellent,” Watson said.
Shane Warne is the highest wicket-taker for Australia in international cricket, across formats, and Ponting is the highest run-getter. The duo played together for Australia during their most successful era and Watson felt both were tactically very sound.
