In an unfortunate incident, an Air India flight skidded off the runway at the Kozhikode International airport in Kerala on Friday. The flight skidded off the tabletop runway and fell into a 30-feet valley, breaking into two pieces while landing. The incident took place amid very heavy rainfall in the area.

The flight was returning from Dubai and was part of India’s “Vande Bharat” repatriation initiative to bring back expatriates from foreign countries during the pandemic. As per reports, at least four, including former Indian Air Force (IAF) test pilot Captain DV Sathe have died while as many as 35 passengers are being treated for injuries at the local hospitals.

Rescue operation is still underway as people from every corner of the country are wishing for the safety of the passengers. The Indian cricket fraternity also took to Twitter to express their disappointment over the tragic incident and wished for the safety of everyone who was in the flight.

“Praying for the safety of everyone onboard the #AirIndia Express Aircraft that’s overshot the runway at Kozhikode Airport, Kerala. Deepest condolences to the families who have lost their near ones in the tragic accident,” wrote batting legend Sachin Tendulkar.

“Praying for the passengers and the staff on the #AirIndia flight in Kozhikode. Shocking news,” wrote India’s ODI and T20I vice captain Rohit Sharma.

Former India opener-turned-politician Gautam Gambhir tweeted: “Terrible news coming from Kozhikode. Frightening visuals of the plane breaking apart. Hoping and praying that all passengers are evacuated safely as soon as possible!”

Former opener Aakash Chopra could not believe the accident as he wrote: “Oh My God…. praying for the safety of everyone involved.”

RP Singh wrote: Shocking and very sad news. My prayers for safety of every one in the #AirIndiaExpress crash #Calicut Airport.?

“Really sad news from Kozhikode. Praying for the passengers and staff on the Air India flight,” wrote India batting star Ajinkya Rahane.

“Kozhikode #flightcrash .. is there anything that this year won’t see?? ?,” wrote spin star R Ashwin.

Former India wicketkeeper Deep Dasgupta wrote: “Prayers for the passengers and their family.”

“My heartfelt condolences to the family of the Pilot who lost his life during the accident & prayers for the ones injured in the Air India aircraft at #Kozhikode,” wrote former allrounder Irfan Pathan.
