In a shocking development, Shubman Gill has been slapped with a massive fine for showing dissent against an on-field umpire during the course of the Ranji Trophy fixture between Punjab and Delhi in Mohali last week.
The unpleasant drama unfolded in the second innings of the game when Shubman Gill again showed discontent while protesting a caught-behind decision from the same on-field umpire and this is why the highly-rated batsman has been fined 100% of his match fee.
Gill, Shorey fined for breaching BCCI’s code of conduct
Apart from Shubman Gill, senior Delhi batsmen Dhruv Shorey also hit the headlines for all the wrong reasons. He was fined 50 per cent of his match fee for breaching the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s code of conduct with repulsive misbehaviour during the fourth-round fixture.
Infamous controversy broke out in the first hour of the game as Shubman Gill was involved in a heated argument with on-field umpire Mohamed Rafi after being given out. Needless to say, Rafi later overturned the decision after consultation with leg umpire identified as Pashchim Pathak only to leave the Delhi team frustrated.
But with Dhruv Shorey threatening to walk out from the pitch, the play was halted for a short period of time. BCCI general manager, cricket operations, Saba Karim stated in a letter to the Delhi & District Cricket Association (DDCA) that, “We have been informed by the Match Referee P Ranganathan of your gross misbehaviour on the field of play in the captioned match.”
“You have violated BCCI code of conduct for showing contrary to the spirit of the game during the match for which you have been fined 50 per cent of your match fees,” Karim mentioned in the letter as per news agency PTI.
