India’s young opening batsman Shubman Gill earned praises from former opener Sunil Gavaskar as the former spearheaded India’s fightback on day two of the third Test against Australia. India remained slightly ahead on day two of the third Test, having ended at 96-2 after dismissing Australia for 338. Sunil Gavaskar labelled Shubman Gill as one of the brightest prospects in the nation.
Shubman Gill opened with Rohit Sharma in the third Test and played an imperious knock of 50 before falling to Pat Cummins. The right-handed batsman collected seven boundaries in the process against the likes of Nathan Lyon, Cummins, Mitchell Starc, and Josh Hazlewood. Gill debuted in the second Test in Melbourne and continued his excellent touch to hand India an edge.
Earlier, Steve Smith’s 27th Test hundred lifted Australia to 338 as the hosts squandered their strong position from the first day. Smith and Marnus Labuschagne put on a century stand; however, none of the other batsmen could chip in as the former was the only one doing the bulk of the scoring. Ravindra Jadeja was the pick of the bowlers, snaring four wickets.
I wish Shubman Gill could have carried on from that half-century to century: Sunil Gavaskar
Sunil Gavaskar wished for Shubman Gill to convert his marvellous fifty into three figures, commenting that he is one of the brightest prospects in recent times. The 71-year old pointed out that Gill produced some memorable strokes and got behind the line, which is crucial as an opening batsman. Gavaskar further observed that the 22-year old defends well as much as he attacks which is why he thinks Gill has a glorious future.
“I wish Shubman Gill could have carried on from that half-century to century. What we saw in this innings confirms that he is one of India’s brightest prospects. He got behind the line, he has got wonderful ray for shots, like I said, he played some sparkling and spanking shots but basically the way he got behind the line of the ball was so, so impressive and that is the thing actually you want to look at opening batsman, how quickly and how confidently they get behind the line of the ball. Shubman Gill’s defence was as good as his Attacking batting and that is why I think he has got a big career ahead of him,” Gavaskar said as quoted by India Today.
