Young Indian batsman Shubman Gill has made it clear that there is no competition between him and Prithvi Shaw for the opening spot in the Indian team. India will take on New Zealand in a two-match Test series which will commence from 21st February in Wellington.

However, the three-day practise match will take place from February 14. India had won the T20I series but lost the ODI series. The Tests will prove to be the decider as to who comes out on top.

Thus, the Indian team is looking to go with a full-strength squad in the first game.

Gill has earned a call in place of injured Rohit Sharma. He has also performed well against New Zealand playing for India A recently. Gill has said that he is ready to take on the challenge and believes that New Zealand wickets are good to bat on.

Shubman Gill Speaks On Competition With Prithvi Shaw:

Apart from Gill, Shaw is also in contention to open the innings for India. However, Gill has made it clear that there is no competition between them for the spot.

“Both of us have performed well in the opportunities that we have got. It depends on the team management who they will pick. So it’s not like there is a fight between us,” Gill told reporters on Thursday.

Gill said that his experience of playing in these conditions should benefit the team if he gets a chance to play. He has scored a total of 527 runs including a double-century (204*) in the five games he played for India A earlier on the tour.

Shaw has been tried in the ODI series but the young opener hasn’t done justice with his potential. He has had a string of low scores in the ODIs and this makes his contention a bit weaker.

Indian openers failing time and again was one of the main reasons behind India’s humiliating loss to the Kiwis.

Now, Team India will like to avoid further humiliation when they lock horns with the Black Caps for the first game of the two-match series at Basin Reserve.
