Cricket betting has always been a menace in world cricket. As the betting is considered illegal, the officials are facing a tough time to decode the ways of keeping games from such illegal means. Though they have managed to make things fall in place, still, the bookies are finding their ways to involve cricketers into it.

One of the famous fixing scandals in the game of cricket took place in 2000 when a bookie named Sanjeev Chawla fixed games with Hansie Cronje and a few other cricketers.

Almost after two decades, Delhi police on Wednesday got custody of bookie Chawla, the key accused in the 2000 case involving late South African captain Cronje.

This is the first successful high profile extradition to India since an agreement was signed with the United Kingdom (UK) in 1992.

According to the court documents filed by Chawla in the UK High Court, he is described as a Delhi-born businessman, who moved to the UK on a business visa in 1996, where he has been based while making trips back and forth to India.

On being flown back to Delhi, he is expected to undergo the required medical examinations before being taken to Tihar Jail and held in custody in accordance with the Indian government’s assurances to the UK courts.

This would mark the first high-profile extradition of its kind under the India-UK Extradition agreement, signed in 1992.

Meanwhile, DCP (crime branch) Ram Gopal Naik said that they will do an in-depth investigation regarding his case and wants to interrogate the former cricketers, whose names were surfaced during those times.

“We will do an in-depth and thorough investigation and are likely to question all the former Indian cricketers whose names surfaced during that time regarding their alleged roles in the match-fixing case,” he said to The Indian Express.

As per the reports, it is learnt that Chawla is one of the major persons for D-Company in fixing matches. It was run by India’s most wanted Dawood Ibrahim and his trustworthy Chhota Shakeel.
