Along with Rishabh Pant, the national selection panel has also released young batsman Shubman Gill from India’s Test squad. Both the players were part of the squad for the ongoing series against Bangladesh. India are currently playing the historic day-night Test at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. Neither Pant nor Shubman Gill made it to the playing elevens of the first Test as well as the ongoing game.

Both the players have now been released to get some game time in Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. Shubman Gill is yet to make his Test debut. He had earned his maiden call-up for the series against South Africa as a back-up opener. Meanwhile, the selectors have called-up Andhra wicketkeeper KS Bharat as a cover for Wriddhiman Saha.

“Rishabh Pant and Shubman Gill have been released from the current Test squad to play the Syed Mushtaq Ali tournament for their respective state teams. Andhra’s wicket-keeper batsman KS Bharat has joined the Test squad as a replacement,” BCCI said in a statement.

Gill will be available for Punjab for their next two Super League matches against Karnataka and Tamil Nadu on November 24 and 25 respectively. He is also likely to play in the semifinal and final of the competition if Punjab make it that far. The right-hander, who made his ODI debut earlier this year, is not a part of India’s T20I and ODI squads for the upcoming series against West Indies.

India in command:

India, meanwhile, have taken a firm grip on the second Test. India’s in-form pacers once again stole the show as they bowled out Bangladesh for just 106. Ishant Sharma picked up five wickets while Mohammed Shami and Umesh Yadav picked up 2 and 3 wickets respectively. In reply, India finished the day on 174 for 3 with Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane in the middle.
