Shubman Gill, on Thursday, received his maiden Test call-up for the upcoming series against South Africa. While Gill truly deserved the selection, one can say that it was surprising. It was surprising because not many were expecting Shubman Gill to break into the Test team so fast.
While Shubman Gill has been one of the most impressive batsmen in domestic circuit, many thought that he would be tried out in the ODI team first. Gill had made his ODI debut earlier this year on the tour of New Zealand and was not recalled since then before the Test call-up. Gill, nonetheless, has been performing consistently irrespective of the format.
On India A’s tour of West Indies, he was the highest run-scorer in the one-day games. In the succeeding unofficial Test, he scored a sublime double ton. Recently, he played a 90-run knock for India A against South Africa A to prove his credentials. Shubman Gill will now be looking to make the most of his Test call-up.
And as Gill looks to kickstart his Test career, he has credited legendary Yuvraj Singh for guiding him. Gill recalled how Yuvraj told him not to sign any company and instead focus on his game. He also credited his Punjab teammate Gurkeerat Mann and his father for their roles in his career.
“He keeps telling me what needs to be done. Few years back, he told me I shouldn’t sign any company, I should just go and play. I didn’t sign anyone. He keeps guiding me, keeps tells me what to do what not to do,” Shubman Gill said.
“There are a lot of people who keep guiding me. In our team (Punjab), we have Yuvraj Singh, Gurkeerat Mann, my father. I’m very close to my father. He keeps telling me, guiding me.”
