Shubman Gill’s stellar show in the recently-concluded India A Test series is an indicator that he is ready for Test debut. The star batsman had scores of 83 and 204 not out batting in middle-order in the first ‘A’ Test and then scored a hundred as an opener in the second game, showing his versatility at different slots.
Speaking of the same, the young Gill stated that he is ready to take on New Zealand in their conditions. He is confident of scoring runs, as he already amassed runs for his India-A side.
With Rohit Sharma being ruled out, Gill is more or less confirmed to open the innings for India in the first Wellington Test.
I think the wind factor is very important – Shubman Gill
Gill spoke about the wind factor in New Zealand, which will make a massive impact on the game. He wants to counter that during his innings by getting the better of the opposition plans.
“I am ready for the series as I have enough match practice and I have played here before in India A tour. I think the wind factor is very important here. The bowlers plan their bowling, fielding according to the wind. In England, ball swings more and off the wicket there is much movement as compared to New Zealand. England is much challenging for batsmen while facing seamers,” Gill told reporters.
Opener role is nothing new to me – Shubman Gill
Further, Gill added that he is quite used to the pressure as an opening batsman for Punjab in the Ranji Trophy competition. He also explained the challenges that opener faces in the longer version of the game and he is hopeful of countering them against New Zealand.
“When you are opening, you obviously have to face the new ball and facing a new ball wherever is a challenge. I have been an opener for my state team so it has helped me. So, it was nothing new to me when I was asked to open the innings. When you are opening the innings you have to set the game for the whole team. You have to set the base for the other batsmen to come in so it will be easy for them,” Gill said.
Well, it would be interesting to see how things would turn out for Gill on his debut.
Coincidentally, he made his ODI debut against the Kiwis when India last toured New Zealand.
