Steven Smith has been ruled out of the remainder of the Caribbean Premier League with a side strain. Barbados Tridents skipper Jason Holder confirmed on Sunday (September 2) during the toss ahead of his team’s game against St Lucia Stars at Kensington Oval.

“He’s pulled an abdominal muscle so he’s out for the rest of the tournament,” Holder said at the toss.

Head coach Robin Singh then confirmed Smith has left for home to recover from the injury.

“He had a slight tear and he had to go back, so it’s a really unfortunate situation,” Singh said.

Smith was playing in the Caribbean Premier League for the first time in his career. The former Australia skipper is currently serving a 12-month ban from playing international cricket for his role in the ball-tampering scandal in South Africa earlier this year.

Smith was signed as replacement for Bangladesh star Shakib Al Hasan. The right-hander returned to competitive cricket by playing in the inaugural Canadian T20 league.

Smith, meanwhile, had an average outing in the Caribbeans. He bowled in three games picking up three wickets and scored 185 runs at an average of 26.42 in seven matches. Tridents are currently lying bottom of the table with just two wins from eight games.

They suffered their latest defeat on Sunday when St Lucia Stars beat them by 6 wickets. It was their fifth straight loss of the season.

Batting first, the Tridents could score only 135 for 7 in the allotted 20 overs. Christopher Lamont starred with the ball, picking up 2 for just 21 in his four overs. In reply, Stars chased down the target with ease in the 18th over.

Meanwhile, Cricket Australia has stated that Smith’s injury is a grade one tear. He is likely to recover in 7-10 days. After that, Smith is set to play in Premier Cricket for Sutherland.
