Sri Lanka put on a dominant display on day four of their Test match against Ireland, declaring on a mammoth total of 704/3 after taking a 212-run lead. This marked the seventh time that Sri Lanka have achieved a Test total of 700 or more, with double centuries from Nishan Madushka and Kusal Mendis, followed by centuries from Dimuth Karunaratne and Angelo Mathews, leading the way.

Resuming on 357/1 after early stumps on day three due to rain, Madushka and Mendis continued to pile on the runs, putting on a 268-run partnership.

Madushka, in particular, was in excellent form, converting his maiden Test ton into a double century. Mendis, too, made his first double hundred later in the day.

Although Ireland managed to take a wicket just before the second new ball was taken, with Madushka out for 205, Mendis and Mathews continued to score freely. The partnership carried Sri Lanka until the total was on 629 when Mendis was caught by Humphreys off Graham Hume’s bowling. Mathews then went on to score his 15th Test century, becoming the 4th Sri Lankan to score a hundred in the innings.

Sri Lanka Create History Following Mammoth Inning Against Ireland

What makes Sri Lanka’s performance even more impressive is that each of their top four batters – Dimuth Karunaratne, Lahiru Thirimanne, Nishan Madushka, and Kusal Mendis – made a century in the innings, with Madushka and Mendis making double centuries. This marks only the third time in Test history that a team’s top four batters have made hundreds in the same innings.

The feat was first achieved by India in 2007 against Bangladesh when Dinesh Karthik, Wasim Jaffer, Rahul Dravid, and Sachin Tendulkar made hundreds, and then by Pakistan in 2019 against Sri Lanka when Shan Masood, Abid Ali, Azhar Ali, and Babar Azam made tons.

In both cases, the teams went on to win the match by a significant margin. Sri Lanka will be hoping to achieve a similar result when they resume play on day five, as they look to secure victory against Ireland.

In addition to Sri Lanka’s batting dominance, credit must also go to their bowlers, who restricted Ireland to a first innings total of 292, giving them a significant lead to build upon.
