Shubman Gill was a surprising omission from Team India’s squad for the upcoming tour of West Indies. He is being widely tipped to be the next big thing in Indian cricket and is seen by many as the one who can solve India’s middle-order woes in ODIs. Gill had made his ODI debut earlier this year in New Zealand. He had got his maiden call after KL Rahul and Hardik Pandya were suspended due to the chat show controversy.
However, the selectors dropped a massive surprise by not naming Gill in the squad. India, on Sunday, announced their ODI, T20I and Test squad for the tour of West Indies. And while there were some new faces in the squads, Gill could not break into any of them. Later, chief selector MSK Prasad made it clear that Gill made his ODI debut only because KL Rahul was unavailable earlier this year. He also said that the youngster would be considered in future.

Well, Prasad’s words might have acted as a catalyst for Gill as he once again reminded everyone of his immense talent with a herculean knock against West Indies A. In the fifth unofficial ODI, the youngster slammed 69 from just 40 balls to help India A crush West Indies A by 8 wickets to seal the series 4-1. It was Gill’s third fifty in the series. The stunning knock was studded by 8 fours and three sixes.
Talking about the game, West Indies were all out for a modest 236 inside 48 overs. Sunil Ambris and Sherfane Rutherford scored fifties for the hosts. In reply, India A chased down the total in 33 overs by losing just two wickets. Rituraj Gaekwad top-scored for the tourists, scoring 99 while Gill scored 69.
