While stating the reason behind his absence from the squad, chief selector MSK Prasad said that Gill in on the waiting list. “I will give clear clarification on MS Dhoni next. I will clear it all. Let’s focus on the squad first. Shubman Gill went to New Zealand when KL Rahul was suspended. He’s on the waiting list,” he said.

Fans found the absence of Gill from the squad difficult to fathom and slammed the panel for ignoring him. Here are some of the tweets –

Gill hade made it to the ODI squad earlier this year after KL Rahul was suspended along with Hardik Pandya. He played two ODIs on the tour of New Zealand where he scored 16 runs. Gill has later dropped from the ODI squad with World Up just a few months away and KL Rahul also making his comeback.

However, with India starting a rebuilding process now Gill was expected to make a comeback but that wasn’t the case. The decision to ignore Gill was the biggest surprise from the selection meeting.

Shreyas Iyer and Manish Pandey made their comebacks to the national side after waiting for their chances for long. Both the players will now make a case to grab a spot in the middle-order and are expected to be given a longer run. They have also been named in the T20I squad.

Unsurprisingly, there was no MS Dhoni in the squad as the news regarding him taking a break was already out. There is no news regarding his retirement for now and he might return for the home series in the month of September.

India play three T20Is, three ODIs and two Test matches on the tour of West Indies next month.
