One of the major surprises from the 14-member squad of Australia was the absence of Glenn Maxwell. The flamboyant batsman has been a match-winner for a while for Australia in limited-overs formats. Much like many of the fans, the Indian skipper Virat Kohli also surprised to not see his name in the squad of Australia.

Glenn Maxwell was the best performer of Australia in their previous tour to India. He played a crucial role in T20I and ODI series for the team, which came on a winning note. He was also in a glorious form with his willow for Melbourne Stars in the ongoing Big Bash League.

I was a bit surprised – Virat Kohli

Speaking of Glenn Maxwell, Virat Kohli stated that he was surprised when Aaron Finch didn’t get the services of Glenn Maxwell in their ranks. Virat Kohli believes the spin option of Maxwell is an added advantage for any skipper in the limited-overs format. Apart from that, Glenn Maxwell got a fair bit of knowledge about the Indian conditions.

“Honestly I did not look at the (squad) and I asked Aaron that have you got only 14… and asked ‘Is Maxwell here?’ and they said he is playing the BBL,” said Kohli. “I was a bit surprised that he wasn’t here, especially the way he performed last time in the T20 series. “He got a hundred in the last game and they won the series. So surprised not to see him because he brings the spinning option as well.”

Marnus Labuschagne is a quality player:

Further, Virat Kohli showered words of praise on the young Marnus Labuschagne, who has been brilliant in the recent past for Australia. Virat Kohli believes Labuschagne will become one of the best in the business for Australia across the formats. The Indian skipper lauded the hunger of Marnus with the bat and for the ball on the field.

“He’s a quality player. We were talking outside… he’s very sure of what he wants to do,” India’s captain said. Again, body language, intent, he’s there, he’s running hard between the wickets, he wants the ball (in the field). I think he’s got the right mindset to be a consistent player, to be a top player in the world for a while.”

As Virat Kohli said, Marnus Labuschagne looked composed in the middle with the white ball as well. Meanwhile, it would be interesting to see whether Australia include Glenn Maxwell for the upcoming series or not. Currently, Glenn Maxwell is plying his trade for Melbourne Stars in Big Bash League.
