Vijay had already agreed to a deal with the county and was waiting for the confirmation from Tamil Nadu Cricket Association. The right-handed batsman will be hoping to make a comeback to the national side on the basis of his county performances.

Last year as well, the senior batsman had made his comeback to the Test side following his impressive performances with Essex. He scored 323 runs at an average of 64.60, that included a century and three half-centuries.

KL Rahul

India have KL Raul and Mayank Agarwal as openers but they both are yet to fix their places in the side. Rahul was dropped from the playing XI in Australia and did not play big innings in 1st Test against West Indies. Agarwal did well in Australia but did not have a good run in the 1st WI Test.

Hence, India still do not have fixed openers in the side and Vijay can force a comeback should he do well with Somerset.

He will be replacing Azhar Ali at Somerset. The Pakistan Test batsman was called to back to the country to be part of the ongoing camp to be in contention for selection. Although PCB allowed few plyers to stay in England.

Vijay last played for India in the second Test of the series in Australia in 2018/19. He had made his comeback to the Test for the tour but did not have a great run.

A Test regular then, Vijay was also dropped from the side during the England Test series. After scoring 26 runs in the first two Tests, he was dropped from playing XI for the third game and was then dropped from the side for the last two Tests.

He missed the home series against West India but forced a comeback with his performances in county stint.
