Sourav Ganguly, BCCI's President-Elect, Set To Leave IPL Franchise Delhi Capitals

Former India captain and soon to be BCCI’s next President, Sourav Ganguly will become the boss of Indian cricket on October 23. The opposition parties in the board are unlikely to field a candidate for the top job, which will see Ganguly being elected unanimously.

On Sunday, Brijesh Patel looked set for the President’s job but later in the evening, Ganguly confirmed that he will be contesting for the position. He will remain in the office till September 2020 before going on a compulsory cooling-off period, as per the Lodha reforms.

Ganguly’s elevation for the President’s post will force to leave IPL franchise, Delhi Capitals. He was named as the advisor of the franchise before IPL 2019 and under his guidance, the team did extremely well by qualifying for the playoffs. They hadn’t made it to the second round for six years but under a new captain (for a full season) and top two former players – Ganguly and Ricky Ponting – Delhi did well.

Though they will now without the services of Ganguly as he cannot hold both the positions at the same time. It remains to be seen if the Shreyas Iyer-led will be able to emulate its performances in the next season, sans Ganguly.

Ricky Ponting, whose position as coach once seemed to be in danger after poor IPL 2018, looks set to continue as the head coach. Other coaches are also expected to be retained but the team will have a new advisor, if it requires the services of one.

Delhi are unlikely to make wholesome changes ahead of the season. Thus far they have only made one trade by bringing in Mayank Markande for Sherfane Rutherford, who moved to Mumbai Indians.

There were also reports that they might rope in R Ashwin as well but with Anil Kumble joining KXIP, the talks seem to be on hold. Delhi, reportedly, were also in talks with Rajasthan Royals to get the services of Ajinkya Rahane but there is no update on it as of yet.
