Ajinkya Rahane was traded from Rajasthan Royals to Delhi Capitals ahead of the IPL 2020. It will be his first season for the capital franchise and Rahane said that it was Sourav Ganguly who approached him with the offer to play for the side first. Rahane had played multiple roles for Rajasthan Royals, he was the captain, and also the opener for the team.
Rahane said that he is really excited to ply his trade for Delhi Capitals. When he was in England playing for Hampshire, the former Delhi Capitals mentor Ganguly, approached him the offer and asked him to take his time and think about it. Rahane was excited to play under Ricky Ponting and Ganguly.
“I am really excited to play for the Delhi Capitals. I remember when I was in Hampshire last year and was playing country cricket, Sourav Ganguly was covering India’s World Cup game. He asked me whether I wanted to play and told me to take my time,” Rahane in an interview with Sports Tak.
“I took my time and the fact that I would get to play under Ganguly and Ponting I felt would help my growth as a player. But as I said, Rajasthan Royals gave me an opportunity and I am grateful to them,” he added.
However, Ganguly had to give up on his mentorship role at Delhi Capitals, due to conflict of interest.
Rahane, meanwhile, assembled with Delhi Capitals teammate on Saturday to depart for IPL 2020 in UAE. He has the experience of 140 IPL matches, where he scored 3820 runs at an average over 32. The top-order batsman has 27 centuries and two centuries to his name.
