Former cricketers Sourav Ganguly and Nasser Hussain were left baffled by MS Dhoni’s batting approach against England on Sunday. In a high-scoring game which was finely poised, MS Dhoni left everyone mighty surprised by hardly making any attempt whatsoever to chase down the total. When Hardik Pandya’s fighting knock of 46 ended, India needed 71 from 31 balls while chasing 338.

Going hammers and tongs was the only option for MS Dhoni and Kedar Jadhav from that point. But the two surprisingly decided to take singles. Their approach made it crystal clear that they had given up as they hardly attempted anything out of the ordinary. Dhoni looked more than happy to rotate the strike as England defended the total without breaking any sweat. India finished on 306 for 5.

In the end, the former India captain remained unbeaten on 42 while Kedar Jadhav scored 12 from 13 balls. Towards the end of the game, the baffled crowd at Edgbaston also booed MS Dhoni. And just like the fans, Sourav Ganguly and Nasser Hussain could not stop themselves from taking a shot at Dhoni either. The two former captains expressed their utter surprise over the tactics of MS Dhoni.

“I am completely baffled,” Nasser Hussain said before adding:  “It’s over to you to explain what is happening.”

Nasser Hussain was also quick to remind everyone of Dhoni’s disastrous performance in England last year during the ODI series. On the other hand, Sourav Ganguly didn’t directly criticise Dhoni but made his intentions very clear with his words.

“The team has to make a decision whether they are just happy not getting out or are looking to win. The message has to go out that they should keep attempting big shots even if they get out. You can’t have a team losing in a chase with 5 wickets in hand,” he said.

A few moments later when the game was almost in England’s clutches, Dhoni casually tapped the ball for a single. A shocked Ganguly then said: “I have no explanation for this. You asked me to explain what is happening, I can’t.”

In reply, Hussain said: “There are so many Indian fans here, they are leaving now. Surely Indian fans will want to see Dhoni have a go.”
