Hashim Amla is looking set to return to action during South Africa’s third match of this World Cup, due to be played against India on June 5. Amla could not make it to the Proteas’ eleven for the ongoing game against Bangladesh as he has still not recovered from the bouncer blow sustained in the World Cup-opener last week.

The right-handed batsman was struck in the head by a 90mph ball from Jofra Archer and had to walk off. Archer’s nasty rising delivery caught the Proteas opener into the grille. At first, it looked as though Amla was okay to continue. He also asked for a different hemet before walking off the field after the concussion tests.

New laws allow teams to replace a player who has a concussion or a suspected concussion while tests are carried out. A player who has been struck on the head will undergo a five-minute on-field assessment and, if there are concerns, they will leave the pitch before a liason officer makes a decision on their replacement. Amla had later come out to bat but could not make much difference as South Africa lost the game by 104 runs.

South Africa team manager, Dr Mohammed Moosajee has now said that the team is hopeful of seeing Amla play the crucial game against India. Moosajee said that Amla has been given the rest as a precautionary measure.

“Hashim hasn’t fully recovered from the blow sustained to the helmet during the match against England on Thursday and is not available for selection for the match today. With the quick turnaround between the two matches, he is being rested as a precaution, based on our post-match re-assessment. We are hopeful that he will make a full recovery to be available for selection for our next match against India,” said Moosajee.

Meanwhile, South Africa have recalled David Miller in the team to replace Amla. The Proteas will be looking to win against Bangladesh before the big clash against India.
