Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has announced their One-day Internationals and Twenty20 Internationals squads for the upcoming tour to Pakistan. After senior cricketers backed out, Lahiru Thirimanne will lead the ODI team while Dasun Shanaka will take over the job of the T20I side.
The Islanders have agreed to visit Pakistan as the host try to bring cricket back to their country. Sri Lanka will play three ODIs and T20Is each starting from September 27. But the series won’t see top Sri Lankan cricketers fight out against Pakistan.
10 Sri Lanka players have pulled out of the upcoming tour of Pakistan, citing security fears. The list includes T20 skipper Lasith Malinga and ODI captain Dimuth Karunaratne along with senior all-rounder Angelo Mathews. Pakistan had been an isolated destination for international cricket since the 2009 terrorist attack in which gunmen targeted a Sri Lanka team bus in Lahore, leaving several cricketers injured.
Lahiru Thirimanne, who will lead in the one-dayers will not be a part of the T20I side. Bhanuka Rajapaksa who has played 52 T20s so far in his career will replace him in the squad after the ODI series. The squad has plenty of new faces which will be a great opportunity for them to claim a national spot.
Although the batting looks relatively weak, the bowling unit has the likes of Nuwan Pradeep, Kasun Rajith, Isuru Udana, and Lahiru Kumara. Dasun Shanaka and Shehan Jayasuriya are the two all-rounders who will look to provide balance to the Sri Lanka team.
