South Africa veteran Dale Steyn recently revealed a number of eyebrows by claiming that he had dismissed Sachin Tendulkar before the latter scored his first ever ODI double century. In 2010, the former India batsman created history when he smashed an unbeaten 200 against South Africa in Gwalior.
And more than a decade after that historic knock, Dale Steyn has made a startling claim by saying that he dismissed Tendulkar before the legendary batsman’s landmark feat. He claimed that umpire Ian Gould had denied him Tendulkar’s wicket on that day.
Speaking on the Sky Sports Cricket Podcast with James Anderson, Dale Steyn said about the record-breaking ODI in Gwalior, “Tendulkar scored the first double hundred in ODI cricket, and it was against us in Gwalior. And I actually remember – I think I got him out lbw when he was about 190 odd. Ian Gould was the umpire, and he gave him not out.”
“And I was like, ‘Why, why did you give him not out!? That’s so dead.’ And he was like, ‘Mate, look around – if I gave him out, I won’t make it back to the hotel,” he added.
Match suggests otherwise:
While Dale Steyn might be claiming that he had dismissed Tendulkar and umpire Gould left him disappointed, if we look deep into the stats of Gwalior ODI, it is enough to say that the legendary South African has made a false claim.
In that game, Dale Steyn had bowled a total of 31 deliveries to Tendulkar and there was no close LBW shout from the South African pacer. As far as his battle with Tendulkar while the latter was in 190s is concerned, he had bowled 3 balls to the ex-India international and none of those deliveries had hit Tendulkar on his pad. In fact, none of the 31 balls Steyn bowled to Tendulkar in the entire match produced a close lbw shout.
