The comparison between Steve Smith and the legendary Don Bradman have come thick and fast ever since the former made his comeback to Tests. After serving the one-year ban, Steve Smith returned to Tests in the ongoing Ashes and has hit the ground running. In the comeback Test, he scored centuries in both the innings and has not looked back since then.

Steve Smith now has the opportunity to break Don Bradman’s record that he set way back in the 1930 Ashes. Smith will have the chance to break Bradman’s record of scoring most runs in a single Ashes. The former Australia skipper needs to do really well even by his own unbelievable standards to break Bradman’s record.

So far, Smith has scored 671 runs at 134.2. It is truly remarkable given he missed out on three innings because of a delayed concussion. The right-hander needs only 99 runs in the fifth Ashes Test to make it the most prolific series of his life. He, however, needs a staggering 304 runs to better Bradman’s mark of 974 runs in 1930.

While scoring 304 in a single game is definitely tough but it is not at all impossible especially for Smith who has been batting like a dream. In the fourth Ashes Test, Smith scored 293 runs while steering Australia to victory. That 82 is his lowest score in the series, one can understand the form he is in.

The Oval, which is the venue of the fifth Test, also holds happy memory for Smith. It is the venue where he scored his maiden Test ton in 2013. With form on his side, Smith will definitely try to break Bradman’s record.

Australia, meanwhile, have already retained the Ashes after winning the fourth Test. They took an unassailable 2-1 lead in the series after thrashing England by 185-runs in Manchester. This is the first time since 2011 that Australia would leave England without losing the Ashes.
