Steve Waugh was at the centre of resurgence for Australian cricket in the 20th century. The elder of the Waugh brothers, Steve is the most successful Test captains to have graced the game beside being a great batsman. Steve Waugh was a medium-pacer too, however, his skills with the bat overpowered his bowling.

Mark Waugh was one of the most elegant stroke-makers in cricketing history. He was nicknamed ‘junior’ as he was the younger twin to Steve Waugh. Mark had gifted ability to play a number of shots elegantly. He would cut, drive and pull effortlessly to leave the bowlers in dismay.

Steve Waugh: We have mutual respect, I want Mark Waugh to do well

“We always had mutual respect. I always wanted Mark to do well. When he was not in the Test side, I walked out to the ground, turned around and just felt that I sort of lost something, that he wasn’t there. In some ways, people say it is a strange relationship. We have that respect for each other. We don’t ring up and talk to each other much. But when we catch up, it’s good to see each other,” Steve Waugh said in a Sky Sports podcast.

Steve retired with 10927 runs in Test cricket at an average of 51.06. He hit 32 centuries and 52 half-centuries in the format. In the ODIs, he featured in 325 matches for Australia, scoring over 7000 runs. He had a brilliant record as a Test captain with 71.92% of wins.

Mark retired with over 16000 runs in international cricket. He had an average of over 41 in Tests and nearly 40 in the ODIs.
