Former Indian skipper Sunil Gavaskar has revealed the best innings he has ever witnessed in his career. The Little Master revealed that Kapil Dev’s knock of 175 against Zimbabwe in the 1983 World Cup is the best ever knock he has seen. India had their backs against the wall in the 20th match of the ODI showpiece.
India had lost both their openers for ducks as Sunil Gavaskar and Kris Srikkanth were dismissed without opening their account. Mohinder Amarnath, who was awarded the Man of the match in the final of the World Cup was dismissed for five runs.
It was a fine knock from Kapil Dev.
Furthermore, India lost Sandip Patil and Yashpal Singh in quick succession. Thus, India was behind the eighth-ball as they reeling at 17-5. Subsequently, Kapil Dev went on play one of the best ODI knocks in the history of the game.
Kapil Dev scored a blistering knock of 175 runs off just 138 balls with the help of 16 fours and half-a-dozen sixes. The Indian captain added a vital partnership of 126 runs with wicket-keeper batsman Syed Kirmani, who scored 24 runs.
Furthermore, Kapil Dev scalped one wicket and gave away 32 runs in 11 overs. India had gone on to win the match by 31 runs as Zimbabwe was skittled out for 235 runs. This was the turning point for India in the World Cup.
Meanwhile, Kapil Dev went on lead India to their maiden World Cup title. India was regarded as the underdogs in World Cup but went on to lift the coveted trophy as they won by 43 runs by beating West Indies in the final.
“Kapil Dev 175* inning is the best ever ODI innings that I have seen as a player or as a commentator,” Sunil Gavaskar said while on Kapil Sharma Comedy Show. The whole Indian team which won the World Cup in 1983 was invited on Kapil Sharma show.
