There is little denying the fact that MS Dhoni is the most famous person from Ranchi as well as Jharkhand. Despite starting his career in the backwaters of Indian cricket, Dhoni overcame all the obstacles to become one of the greatest-ever cricketers in the history of the game. His remarkable feat in the game later helped Ranchi and Jharkhand get a special place in the cricketing map of India.

Dhoni will go down as one of the finest players and skippers in the history of the game. He began his career in the worst possible manner, getting run-out for a duck. It was, however, not the precursor of the things to follow. In just his 5th ODI, he slammed 148 against Pakistan to become a crowd favourite.

There was no looking back since then, as he established himself as one of India’s premier batsman in ODIs.

The most memorable moment of his early part of the career came in 2007 when he led a bunch of youngsters to the World T20 title in South Africa. He was soon given the captaincy in all the format, and the rest is all history. Till date, he is the only skipper to have won all the ICC events after leading India to World Cup glory in 2011 followed by the Champions Trophy title in 2013.  He also led the Indian team to the pinnacle of Test cricket in 2009 in addition to winning several historic overseas series. His record as batsman and wicketkeeper is even more impressive.

Well, Jharkhand State Cricket Association (JSCA) recently paid tribute to Dhoni by naming a stand in the JSCA Stadium after him. The stand was inaugurated before the third ODI between India and Australia on March 8. But it seems like former India skipper Sunil Gavaskar wants more from JSCA. The legendary batsman feel that the association should name the entire stadium after Dhoni.

Gavaskar made the comment while commentating during the game.

“Good question, now that the pavilion is named after Dhoni, the stadium can be called after some national figure I guess. I don’t know which national/international figure in Ranchi is bigger than MSD. If anything, this stadium should have been called Mahendra Singh Dhoni Stadium, not just the pavilion whole stadium should have been called MS Dhoni stadium. That would have been the ultimate tribute from Ranchi to their beloved son,” said Gavaskar when asked about the newly-inaugurated MS Dhoni stand by fellow commentator.

India, meanwhile, had a game to forget in Ranchi as Australia beat them by 32 runs to keep the series alive.

An avid cricket lover, I just love this game more than anything. Writing about cricket keeps me closer to the game.
