The Central government will have to assure the Supreme Court that data collected under Aadhaar+ is fully protected and cannot be misused to ensure that the ambitious scheme is a success. The apex court on Thursday asked what the nature of the safeguard is and prevent the sale of information by private operators.
A nine-judge bench last year declared the right to privacy a fundamental right and asked the government to prepare a data protection regime. The apex court’s Constitution bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices A K Sikri, A M Khanwilkar, D Y Chandrachud and Ashok Bhushan asked whether the government had taken enough measures to protect data related to Aadhaar.
The bench raised the issues after noting that the details of former Indian captain MS Dhoni was made public. Justice Chandrachud asked:
“What safeguard the government has introduced to ensure that information is not sold out and what is the nature of the safeguard?”
Dhoni has played 312 ODI’s for India and has scored 9898 runs leaving him short by 102 runs of the 10000 runs milestone. If Dhoni reaches the milestone, he will become the first wicket-keeper batsman to do so. Dhoni retired from the Test format in 2014 after playing 90 Test matches and scoring 4876 runs.
