Team India were outclassed in every department by a formidable Australian side in the women’s T20 World Cup final in Melbourne on Sunday. With the 85-run win over India, Australia defended the title and added a record fifth to their name.

Adding to the poor batting and bowling performance, India also dropped quite a few catches in the final. Australia openers Alyssa Healy and Beth Mooney were dropped once each with the fourth over of the match. Later, the dropped catches cost India merry.

Healy and Mooney went on to add 115-run for the first wicket for Australia, virtually taking the game away from India. If Shefali Verma would have taken the catch early to dismiss Healy it could have been a different game altogether.

“The way we played in the league stages, it was outstanding. It was unfortunate to drop those catches today. I still have a lot of faith in my team,” Harmanpreet Kaur said in the post-match interview.

India lacked composure at the big stage. 16-year-old Shafali Verma was sent packing in the third ball of the match with Smriti Mandhana, Jemmimah Rodrigues and Harmanpreet Kaur following the suit.

Deepti Sharma (33) showed some resilience for India but till then the match had already slipped out of India’s grip.

Veda Krishnamurthy (19) and Richa Ghosh (18) played cameo knocks towards the end but there was no real intent shown by them.

“We know we weren’t able to win the game because of our fielding. We need to keep these things in mind. The future is great for us. We need to trust ourselves. I trust this team. The first game was very good, it gave us a lot of confidence,” Harmanpreet Kaur said.
