With the introduction of T20I cricket, the batsmen have become a lot of more fearless in terms of their approach towards batting. That’s evident not just in the shortest format, but in ODIs as well. Terms such as textbook technique, patience, and early caution have gone out of the window.

Those, who have the ability to hit big sixes, at will, reign supreme in the sport nowadays. Throughout history, there have been some batsmen who were renowned for their gung-ho approach, coming out all guns blazing, having just one motive, to clear the fence.

With that said, today, we will look at some of the top six-hitters of the game, albeit, only those who are still around.

Here are the top ten active batsmen with most sixes in ODIs:

10) Marlon Samuels (West Indies) – 118

West Indian batsman Marlon Samuels stands at the tenth spot for the most sixes in ODIs. Marlon Samuels is one of the best middle-order batsmen produced by the Caribbean; however, due to getting involved in leaking match-related information in 2006, his career was shortened.

In 207 ODIs, the Jamaican mustered 118 sixes alongside ten centuries and 30 fifties. The veteran also scored 5606 runs, averaging 32.97. Samuels played two of the most significant innings in West Indies’ two T20 World Cup victories in 2012 and 2016. However, the 39-year old could not do the same in ODI World Cups for the West Indies.

9) Aaron Finch (Australia) – 119

Australia’s skipper Aaron Finch is well renowned for his explosive style of batting. The 33-year-old made his debut in 2013 and has come a long way since. In the seven years since Finch has played 126 ODI matches for the Aussies, having amassed 4882 in the process, including 16 centuries and 26 fifties.

The right-handed batsman has an average of 41.02, and he has hit a mammoth 119 sixes in ODIs, therefore, Finch ranks at number ten on this list.

8) Virat Kohli (India) – 121

Considered one of the best batsmen in contemporary cricket, Virat Kohli ranks ninth on this list, having hit a staggering 121 sixes in his ODI career.

The 31-year-old has collected 248 caps since lining up for India the first time, in 2008. In the meantime, he has scored 11,867 runs, with an impressive average of 59.33.??The Indian skipper has registered 43 centuries and 58 half-centuries so far.

7) Jos Buttler (England) – 125

The player who had a crucial role in England’s World Cup triumph last year, Jos Buttler’s last appearance for the national team, in an ODI fixture, came in the final against New Zealand, coincidentally. Since beginning his career in 2012, Buttler has taken part in 142 matches for the Three Lions.

The 29-year-old has just 3843 runs to show for it though, at an average of 40.88. Meanwhile, the wicket-keeper batsman has nine centuries to his name, as well as 20 fifties. Although he ranks at eight on the list of active batsmen with most sixes in ODIs, having hit 125 biggies.

6) Kieron Pollard (West Indies) – 125

Caribbean cricketer Kieron Pollard has been playing ODI cricket for 13 years now, having begun his journey with the West Indies in 2007. Since then, he has racked up 113 caps for the national team, scoring 2496 runs in the process. That, Pollard has fewer runs than others on this list is, because he’s a middle-order batsman.

The 32-year-old has an average of 26, he has scored three centuries and ten fifties, although his tally of 125 sixes in ODI cricket lands Pollard a place on this list of batsmen with most sixes.

5) Ross Taylor (New Zealand) – 146

Ross Taylor is one of the most experienced batsmen on this list and was a key cog in New Zealand’s recent home assignment against India. Like Pollard, Taylor is also a middle-order batsman, but he did a lot of damage against Virat Kohli’ team.

The 36-year-old has played 232 matches in national colours, having amassed 8574 runs with an average of 48.44. In his illustrious career, the veteran has hit 21 tons and 51 fifties so far. Taylor’s 146 sixes in ODI cricket, earn him a place on the sixth spot, on this list.

4) Martin Guptill (New Zealand) – 176

New Zealand opener Martin Guptill has 176 sixes and therefore, he stands at number five on the list of active batsmen with most sixes in ODIs. The 33-year-old has turned out 183 times for the national team and he has 6843 runs to his name.

Guptill averages 42.50 in ODI cricket, and he has scored 16 centuries, and 37 half-centuries in his career 11-year-old playing career.

3) Eoin Morgan (England) – 217

Eoin Morgan became the first English skipper to lead his side to World Cup glory last year and etched his name in the history books. Having made his debut in 2006, Morgan has amassed 239 appearances for the national team in ODIs.

The 33-year-old has racked up a total of 7510 runs so far, at an average of 39.73, including 14 centuries and 46 fifties.

Morgan has 217 sixes in ODI cricket, and therefore he ends up at number four of the list of active batsmen with most sixes.

2) Rohit Sharma (India) – 244

The man who has three double centuries to his name, Rohit Sharma is one of the best openers in world cricket. The 32-year-old began his career in 2007 and he has been on a record-breaking spree in ODI cricket ever-since. Rohit has played 224 matches so far, scoring 9115 runs in the process.

Rohit has a brilliant average of 49.27 in ODIs and has 29 centuries and 43 fifties to his name. Rohit’s tally of 244 sixes in the format, is the second-best in the history of cricket, among active batsmen.

1) Chris Gayle (West Indies) – 331

‘Universe Boss’ Chris Gayle began his career in 1999, has he been giving opposition bowlers sleepless nights ever since. Gayle has racked up 301 caps for the West Indies whereas he has 10,480 runs so far, at an average of 37.83. The veteran has 25 centuries in ODIs, as well as 54 fifties.

The 40-year-old left-hander is well renowned for his explosive batting, having struck a humongous 331 sixes in ODI cricket, the most by any active batsmen to date.

Gayle last turned up for the West Indies in July last year, but he hasn’t yet retired from the format.
