It Was Worth All The Gold: Sachin Tendulkar

In the year following 1990, Sachin Tendulkar received one of the greatest compliments of his career when the legendary Don Bradman remarked that he saw shades of himself in Sachin. This statement from Bradman, which Tendulkar considers worth its weight in gold, is one of the most iconic lines spoken about him by former cricketers, players-turned-commentators, and his peers.

Sachin Tendulkar has opened up about this monumental praise from the Don, but he has chosen not to elaborate on the similarities that Bradman mentioned.

“That’s a tough question to answer. That’s a massive statement. I was only 22 then – 22 or 23. And for a 22 – or 23-year-old professional athlete to hear something like that was its worth in gold. It wouldn’t be right for me to speak about what the similarities and all that. I would leave it to his family. From my side, I thought the statement came at a time where I felt ‘Wow! I need to push myself harder’. I think it’s the best tonic one can get. To feel that you are being noticed; your game is being appreciated, it came at the right time.”

By 1997, Sachin Tendulkar had already established himself as a legitimate superstar not only in Indian cricket but also throughout the country. With over 14 centuries and more than 5000 runs in both formats of the game, Sachin had not yet reached the prime of his career when he was appointed as the captain of the Indian team.

The compliment from Bradman served as a motivation for Tendulkar to keep pushing himself to greater heights. Over the next 16 years, Tendulkar did just that, continually improving and maintaining his high level of performance.
