Meanwhile, the former Test specialist, who changed his position from opening to middle order, VVS Laxman lavishes praise on Rohit Sharma.

Rohit was promoted up the order by the team management after the selectors decided to drop the struggling KL Rahul from India’s squad for the South Africa Tests. The 32-year-old has a reputation of being one of the most fearsome hitters of the ball in limited-overs cricket but often struggled to replicate the same form in red-ball cricket.

Rohit Sharma proved his mettle as an opener with a sublime century at the top of the order on Day 1 of the first Test between India and South Africa in Vizag on Wednesday. It also marked his fourth century, first as an opener in Test cricket, which came off 154 balls. Rohit Sharma made run scoring look easy from the onset to keep South Africa on the backfoot. His 154-ball knock was laced with 10 boundaries and four hits over the fence.

It was more of application from Rohit Sharma – VVS Laxman

Speaking of the same, the batting great VVS Laxman heaped rich praise on Rohit Sharma, saying the newly-promoted India opener made the most of the opportunity that came his way in the 1st Test between India and South Africa.

“It was less of technique, more of application. He knew he had to go through the opening spell of Kagiso Rabada and Vernon Philander who I thought bowled really well. They didn’t give away anything to the Indian openers. The way he used his experience was great to see,” VVS Laxman told Star Sports on Wednesday.

“He left a lot of balls, played with a lot of patience. The way he used his crease against Philander was good to see. All the doubts people had as to whether Rohit Sharma would be successful in Test match cricket, especially as opener. All those doubts are erased. I just hope continues. He has got a good opportunity to score a big hundred.

As VVS Laxman said, it was an intent filler century for Rohit Sharma. He proved his mettle in the middle and showed why he is called the best hope to open the innings for India in Test format of the game.
