The upcoming series between India and West Indies will witness the International Cricket Council (ICC) introducing a new rule to eradicate mistakes by umpires. There have been instances when umpires tend to miss the front-foot no balls and makes an error in judgement which changes the complexion of the whole match. As a result, in the upcoming series, the third umpire will call the front-foot no balls and not the on-field officials, ICC confirmed on December 5 (Thursday).
Meanwhile, the decision to make the third umpire the adjudicator of the front foot no balls was taken in August this year. The system was first trialled in the ODI series between England and Pakistan back in 2016. And now, ICC has decided to test it again after its Cricket Committee recommended its use in as many limited-overs matches as possible.

TV umpire to call no-ball
The apex body has decided to put it on trial in the series when India lock horns against West Indies. The bilateral series will have three T20Is starting from December 6 (Friday) in Hyderabad followed by the same number of ODIs. ICC in a statement has also explained in details about how the system will work. On any occasion, the on-field umpire cannot decide on a front-foot no-ball.
“Throughout the trial, the Third Umpire will be responsible for monitoring every ball bowled and identifying whether there has been any front foot infringement,” the ICC said in a statement. “If there has been an infringement on the front foot, the Third Umpire will communicate this to the On-Field Umpire who will subsequently call a no-ball. As a result, the On-Field Umpire will not call a front foot no-ball without the advice of the Third Umpire,” it added.
