AB de Villiers, one of the modern-day greats announced his retirement with an immediate effect on Wednesday, which surprised the whole cricketing world.

The Proteas legend represented his country in 114 Tests, 228 ODIs, and 78 T20Is. Overall, he registered 20,014 international runs (8765 in Tests, 9577 in ODIs and 1672 in T20Is). He also finished his career with a batting average over 50 in both Tests, and ODIs.

The 34-year old enjoyed a blistering international career ran well over a decade. Moreover, de Villiers’ stunning exploits on the cricket field made him one of the most loved cricket stars across the world.

Meanwhile, de Villiers currently holds a few records in the white-ball cricket, and one of them is the fastest ODI hundred. He hammered a century off just 31 balls against the Windies and broke the record set by Corey Anderson (36 deliveries).

However, it will be an uphill task to break this record, and only a handful can give a shot at it. On that note, let’s take a look at the three players who can break ABD’s fastest ODI hundred.

Chris Lynn

The swashbuckling opener from Australia is a bowler’s nightmare. Though he is yet to make a mark in international cricket, there is no doubting his hitting abilities. The right-handed batsman is touted to be the next big thing in Australian cricket.

He has played some stunning knocks in the Big Bash League (BBL) and the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Lynn missed Australia’s One-Day series against England early in the year because of an injury, but he could return to the ODI team after IPL 2018.

Lynn became the first man to hit 100 sixes in the BBL. His innings of 93 from 41 deliveries for Kolkata Knight Riders in 2017 took the Indian Premier League by storm.

Arguably the best limited-overs batsmen from England and one of the most destructive batsmen in the world, Jos Buttler has been phenomenal for the Poms in the limited-overs cricket.

Butler holds the record for the fastest ODI hundred by an England player. He scored his hundred in 46 balls against Pakistan in 2015.

The 27-year old displayed some brutal hitting on his way to a stunning 100. The Englishman has previously also scored a 61-ball hundred against Sri Lanka in 2014.

He has now scored the three fastest England centuries in ODIs. Moreover, he almost single-handedly took Rajasthan Royals to the playoffs in this edition of IPL.

Meanwhile, Buttler has a wide range of shots and great hitting abilities to challenge De Villiers’ record.

Rohit Sharma:

The Indian Cricket team opener is one of the cleanest strikers of the cricket ball in world cricket right now.

Meanwhile, Rohit Sharma is the only cricketer to register three double hundreds to his name, as is one of the possible contenders to break de Villiers’ record.

Although he has lacked consistency, he is a gem to watch when he finds the middle of the bat. With 180 ODI behind his back, Sharma has the perfect chance to surpass ABD’s records.

With a lot of limited-over coming up, all eyes will be on Sharma, who has had an average time in the IPL for Mumbai Indians
